How to gain support from others

I have come to realize that everything I have accomplished is a result of (1) my effort and (2) support from others. Going forward, as I have a number of goals I want to accomplish, I have spent time thinking about how I can continue to receive this necessary support from others.

I have concluded that the following items have helped me gain support from others:

— focusing on listening and understanding versus talking and being understood

— offering/providing support (see [A] below)

— sharing my dreams and my “why”

— being brief and peaking interest then providing an opportunity to learn more

Try to understand versus being understood.

Listening. I often catch myself talking more than listening and I am realizing from my own experience and from reading “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie the importance of listening. Whenever I meet with someone, I often think about how much I can learn from listening instead of trying to explain something about me. I have found my conversations to be much more engaging for myself and the other individual because it is no longer a one sided conversation about myself.

Providing support. The title of this post is about gaining support from others. The old concept of treating others the way you like to be treated is very relevant here. If I want support from others, I should focus on providing support first. #LeadingByExample

Sharing my “why” and my dreams. I have found that sharing my “why” allows other people to understand my motivation. Sharing my dreams helps explain my goals so that others understand how to help me reach those goals. Here is an example of explaining the “why” and sharing dreams.

Being brief. In preparation for emceeing/hosting weddings, a friend of mine (Umang Desai) shared the importance of being brief. I have realized that this advice is valuable across the board. I often try to be brief while providing more information about whatever I am speaking about by sharing content I have written. So far this plan has worked well! #BeingBrief

I have found that getting some port from others is imperative for and he goes I hope to accomplish. I am very curious on your perspective on what has helped you gain support from others. Please share any thoughts/questions below or reach out to me (630–551–8482, shahshaan@gmail.com).
